The Psychotherapy Center
The Psychotherapy Center is a full practice service located in Norfolk’s historic Ghent district. Its staff is comprised of professionals with diverse experience and specialties.

Norfolk CSB
Norfolk CSB was found in 1969 treat Norfolk residents for mental health, mental retardation, and substance addiction problems.
Norfolk CSB’s mental health services focus on adults with serious mental illness and children with serious emotional disturbances. Some of the services include:
- Case management, which involves activities and services designed to assist individuals and their families receive necessary educational, medical, psychiatric, vocational, and social needs.
- Psychiatric services with a primary focus on providing psychiatric assessment, evaluation, and stabilization services. The goal is to allow the client to engage in productive every day functioning.
- Mental Health Residential Services, which focuses on providing transitional supervised independent living for clients who have mental health and/or substance abuse problems.
- Program of Assertive Community Treatment, which is aimed toward adults with persistent and severe mental illness. It provides services all day, every day of the year.
- The Hospitality Center, which is a psychosocial rehabilitation program that offers the following:
o Pre-vocational training
o Vocational experiences
o Psycho-educational classes
o Literacy training
o Empowerment socialization
o Family support and education - Emergency services and crisis counseling to provide short-term crisis counseling and referrals to people on an emergency basis. This includes:
o Telephone intervention
o Face to face assessment and evaluation (including pre-admission screening)
o Psychiatric consultation about substance abuse and mental health
Norfolk CSB also offers substance abuse treatment. Its programs include:
- The Opioid Treatment Program, which strives to reduce the psychological, physical, and social problems common to addiction. This program also addresses other high-risk behaviors associated with addiction, such as sexual promiscuity.
- A Day Treatment Program that consists of regularly scheduled sessions, with a minimum of twenty treatment hours per week.
- An Intensive Outpatient with three levels of intensity, depending on the patient’s needs.
- Traditional Outpatient treatment, which is the least restrictive form of treatment.
Norfolk CSB also works with the Criminal Justice Services to provide treatment to incarcerated individuals. One of these is the “Bridges to Freedom” program which exclusively services women. This program lasts for a minimum of six months, with the first twelve weeks involving intensive education about addiction issues. Patients also receive group therapy and individual sessions. Goals of the program are to help the patient gain a sense of responsibility, a healthy self-image, and a willingness to cooperate.
The “Freedom Within” program is solely for men who have requested substance abuse treatment and psycho-education. Patients are expected to stay in the program for two to four months.
Drug Court is another program that was developed with the Norfolk Circuit Court. It works to divert non-violent criminals who are addicted to drugs to a court-monitored treatment program rather than jail.
