Founded in 1982, NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) Dallas, Inc. is "Dallas's Voice on Mental Illness." NAMI describes itself as “a nonprofit, grassroots, self-help, support and advocacy organization of consumers, families, professionals, and friends of people with severe mental illnesses.” The organization is a resource for those with mental disorders such as, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and anxiety disorders. Although the primary focus of NAMI Dallas is on self-help and support groups, in addition it reaches out to the community in support of education, program development, and new mental health facilities.
Currently Dallas has three major medical facilities that provide treatment of mental disorders for its 1.2 million citizens.
Serving greater Dallas since 1966, Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas has been a member of Texas Health Resources since 1997, serving residents in Dallas and the DFW Metroplex. Presbyterian Hospital offers both inpatient and outpatient services for treatment of mental disorders such as anxiety, depression, phobias, schizophrenia, and panic disorders. Outpatient services also include psychiatric evaluations, stress management, treatment of chemical dependency, family therapy services, and both group and individual psychotherapy.
Over the past 100 years, Baylor Dallas has provided DFW citizens with excellent patient care, medical education, research, and community service. Baylor Dallas offers a number of programs for adults with mental health problems. Their team of qualified mental health professionals is on-call around the clock providing crisis intervention services and emergency admissions. Children's Medical Center Dallas is an environment created just for kids. A private, not-for-profit institution, Children’s is the only Dallas healthcare facility that deals exclusively with diseases and disorders among children.
Children’s Medical Center provides a slate of comprehensive mental health programs for Dallas youth.
