Allentown, Pennsylvania, dating back to 1762, is a city with lots of history. It’s a city that is proud of its heritage and proud of the services that it offers the community.
Allentown is the third largest city in Pennsylvania, but by national standards is still a small city. Small city or not, though, Allentown offers many big city services to its community. One of Allentown’s most prized services is its parks service which provides a wealth of safe play areas and parks.
Unfortunately, however, during our research, we found that Allentown may have left mental health initiatives out of its list of priorities. In fact, the Allentown website fails to even mention mental health in its “Health Department” section. Fortunately, though, Lehigh County, the State of Pennsylvania, and various private organizations pick up the city’s slack.
The Allentown State Hospital offers a quite setting, situated on 206 wooded acres. Despite its peaceful setting, however, patients generally only go to Allentown State Hospital under court order.
Once at the hospital, the patients are assessed, treated, and then reintegrated into the community once they are ready for that transition. The goal of Allentown State Hospital is to enable patients to return to the community and to help them live to their fullest potential.
The Lehigh County Mental Health Program was organized as a way to manage federal, state, and local funds. The funds are used to provide community based mental health services to people who suffer from mental illnesses.
